Joos van Cleve and a collaborator, The Crucifixion with Saints and a Donor

In this splendid triptych the talents of a landscape specialist have been combined with those of the figurative painter Joos van Cleve. The setting for the Crucifixion, witnessed by the Virgin, Saint John and the donor with his patron Saint Paul, is a vast landscape whose style is indebted to Joachim Patinir (represented in the adjacent gallery). The panoramic vista unifies the interior. On the left wing are Saints John the Baptist and Catherine, on the right Anthony of Padua(Another key pattern has him meditating on an open book in which the Christ Child himself appears) and Nicholas of Tolentino. The latter two suggest that the altarpiece was an Italian commission.
